Crossover SUV shopping can be confusing enough to make those involved will themselves back to the station wagon era. What's reliable? What's safe? What's needed? What's not?
 | | With Forester's proven safety, utility and drivetrain, it remains a desirable pick. |
Subaru's latest Forester has things taken care of when it comes to offering shoppers a 'safe bet'. Safety, reliability and value are all covered off here- in fact, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) says that it's the best new SUV under $35,000 in Canada this year.
Forester- now with fewer squared edges! The latest Forester brings a restyle that smooths out the bodywork, stretches the wheelbase and boasts a more sophisticated, less box-inspired look.
This isn't what you'd call a head-turner of a machine at its base level, though it's appreciably concise to look at, packs a proud stance and is distinctive enough to be located in the parking lot with minimal second guessing.
The basic tester included a chrome grille appliqué, dual-outlet exhaust and roof rails for something of a sporty and well-traveled look. With the $1,100 automatic transmission, it came in priced under $27,000.
A cabin that grows on you It may not put you in love at first sight, but after interfacing with the Forester's interior a bit, you'll come to appreciate it more and more.
Controls are basically laid out, easily accessible and intuitive. You'll find a driver information computer, steering wheel mounted controls and a set of heated front seats on the entry Forester 2.5X model. The driver's seat is height adjustable, though a bit more thigh support would have been appreciated on long trips.
Without much guess work in the shopping process, you'll likely find everything you need in here- and little you don't.
The cabin works at a deeper level than its materials and hardware alone. Plastics selection is nothing impressive, and you'll find other contenders with more upscale and sophisticated looking interiors. Ultimately, it's Forester's plentiful at-hand storage, solid feel and easy-to-use controls that make it an easygoing, pleasant place to spend some time.
